How to Find Your Perfect Niche Market

If you don't find a niche market for the product or service
you offer, you will most probably fail. Most newcomers who
wish to do business on the Internet often market to
everyone they can find with the expectation that everyone
will do business with them. This is the same as throwing
mud against the wall and hoping some of it will stick. They
have not yet found their niche market.

What is niche marketing?

A niche market is composed of individuals and businesses
that have similar interests and needs, which can be readily
identified and that can be easily targeted and reached.

Finding a niche for your business means finding a great
product or service for a highly targeted audience.

Here's the process to find your niche business:

1. Find a niche product or service you are passionate about
- this will greatly improve your chances of being
successful. Why? Because it's the only way you're going to
be able to devote the kind of time and effort to create a
meaningful web site, build up the right traffic, generate
worthwhile income, and enjoy what you're doing.

2. Choose a niche product or service you are knowledgeable
about - reflect on what skills, hobbies or products you
know the most about. If you don't have the knowledge yet,
then choose a niche product that you would love to promote,
then spend the necessary time to research it, so you can
eventually become an expert in your marketing niche.

3. Define your niche market - do the necessary research to
see if there is a market for your niche product. To create
a profitable business for your niche product, you need to
ask yourself these questions:

a) Is there sufficient demand for it? - if you choose a
field that is too broad it may be hard to stand out from
the competition ie camping equipment is your niche product.
Well, unless you are a large corporation such as Sports
Authority (a large retail store in my town), you won't
stand out from the crowd. However, a more highly targeted
niche product could be Coleman Camping Equipment.

b) Keyword research - use keyword tools such as the
overture suggestion tool or wordtracker to how many people
are searching each month on keywords related to your niche
product.

Here's an example:

According to overture (at the time of writing this
article), the keyword phrase "camping equipment" was
searched 76164 times in one month. If you do a search on
Google.com for camping equipment you will find 1,610,000
web sites show up - heck, that's too competitive.

However "coleman camping equipment" generated 1242 searches
in one month according to overture. Google.com shows 93,200
competing websites. That's much better though still somewhat
competitive.

Tip: Notice how not many web sites (even the top ones),
don't have "coleman camping equipment" in their titles.
This is just one way to create a high ranking on the search
engines for your newly targeted web site. This will then
provide lots of targeted traffic to your site.

c) Take a survey – you may already have products or
services that you selling to your customers. If so, ask
questions within your survey about what product/service
would help your customers business. If it can help them
save time by gaining more knowledge or automating tasks,
you could have a winner.

d) Create Your Own Unique Selling Position (USP) - study
your competition to find out what they emphasize about the
product which makes them stand out from the crowd. Then
decide on something that will make your business unique
from the others. It could be something unique about the
product (ie discount coleman camping equipment) or you
could choose a more highly defined target market
(ie boyscout organizations and clubs throughout the USA).

4. Build and promote your web site - to develop a
profitable web site for your niche product you need to
create a number of informative pages that will not only
attract visitors from the search engines, but inform and
move them to purchase from your site.

Niche marketing is the key to developing a profitable
business that will make you stand out from the crowd. By
doing the necessary research and building an informative
web site, you will become an expert in your niche marketing
field.

Advantages of Niche Marketing

In niche marketing, it is a way of selling a particular product to a particular segment of customers. It is the best way to reveal the sector of the market that is usually ignored and untapped. Niche marketing can be applied to various types of businesses. May it be beauty products, books, electronics, toys, etc. No matter what type of product it deals, its primary role is to attract a small segment of a specific market.
Here are the advantages of niche marketing:

* In a smaller market segment, it is easy to build relationships. Your voice can easily be heard. So, selling your niche products would be much easier.

* With a market with less competitors, it would be easier for you to gain bigger returns. Having the niche product in a smaller market segment would allow you to dictate a higher price. This is one of the benefits of doing a thorough market research.

* You will be able to establish good credibility with your customers. You will supply them with useful information and in return, it would make your influence to them greater. Thus, whatever you would suggest to them, they will eventually buy. But one important factor that you should not forget is to increase the loyalty of your customers. In order to achieve this, you must satisfy them by giving them quality products always.

Having a smaller market segment would be cheaper in cost, than a larger market segment. Promotional effort will be lesser and can be easily be heard by the consumers. But despite that, it will be more effective since information can easily reach the customers. Niche marketing is not only cost-effective but it will surely give you a better profit. Aside from receiving good revenues, it gives you credibility, which is really hard to build. Another advantage of this is it will develop a good customer relationship because you can interact directly with them when in a smaller market segment. Having all these would show the great and long term advantages of finding you niche in a particular market. It will give you longevity, that will make you survive in a fast-paced and very competitive online marketing environment.

Finding a Niche You Can Scratch

There is a lot of talk about niche marketing strategies. What are the things that smart marketers do to get their site listed high on the search engines?

Well, things online have changed dramatically since 1995.

Back then you could register killer domains for a song and be the first kid on the block to have a site established in a major niche.

But as the years have passed, certain sites have come to dominate the broader niches (which is pronounced "nitch" and NOT "neesh") with key niche marketing strategies, leaving only bread crumbs for those who want to compete.

Or is that the whole truth?

I believe there are still thousands of untapped niches, or micro-niches.

For example, you may not want to go head-to-head with Yahoo! Travel or Expedia in the travel niche.

But what about narrowing the niche to air travel, adventure travel or cruises?

Still too broad to compete?

No problem!

Define a micro-niche such as adventure travel in the Himalayas, camping in the Rocky Mountains or cruises for people with special needs!

Now take that same approach to absolutely any niche and you will find that there is always opportunity.

And once you have established your niche, use key niche marketing strategies to get the word out and dominate your niche.

Some of these strategies include proper search engine optimization, a healthy balance of keywords, email campaigns and perhaps pay-per-click to drive traffic.

If you are excited about your chosen topic, working your site will be a labor of love. In fact, you could say that you have found "a niche you can scratch"

How To Find “Hungry Niche Markets”

This is where I got really, really stuck. How in the world would I know if a micro-niche market was profitable? Then one day, a simple trip to the grocery store stopped me dead in my tracks.

The Magazine Aisle

Standing there browsing the magazines while I waited for my teenage daughter to go get the latest and greatest hair conditioner that she HAD to have, something hit me like a ton of bricks falling from the sky.

I stopped….looked up…and looked around me. The answer was right in front of me.

Each magazine was a niche market.

Think about it… Each magazine you see is a niche market. It is carefully planned and created to attract a certain demographic of people that have at least one thing in common.

Better yet, if there is a magazine about that niche market – there is MONEY in that niche market.

How do I know that? Magazines survive off the revenue of their advertisers. The advertisers pay more for larger subscription/circulation stats. If the advertisers are willing to advertise, guess what? Those ads are probably profitable.

Here’s where it gets even better for you. Each magazine is carefully created to contain the things that people in that niche market WANT TO KNOW. They’ve already done the research…they probably have a really good idea of what to put IN their magazine to please their readers AND their advertisers, right?

Ready for this? Each article within one of those magazines is a sub-niche or micro-niche of that niche market. Those headlines on the FRONT of the magazine should be paid attention to, also. There is a reason they are there. The magazine is counting on those words to attract their market to reading the magazine.

The Importance of being passionate about your Niche

It can be incredibly difficult for an internet marketer finding a niche that is both enjoyable and profitable at the same time.

You will probably end up competing with hundreds or thousands of other internet marketers unless your interests are very specific and fall far outside the bounds of mainstream culture. It is still possible to exploit the possiblilites and dynamics of this type of niche in your favor even though they are often oversaturated with competition made up of activists and enthusiasts and even imitators trying to cash in on the popular niche.

So which is better? Dominating popular niches or making a better living via ultra-specific niches. Poplular niches are usually much largers, but the ultra-specific ones are easier to profit from. There are several good reasons for this. To start, the amount of work and effort needed to dominate popular ultra-competitive niches is great. The time required can keep you from working on additional projects. Next, you spend your time worrying about your competitors and trying to figure out their next moves so you can stay one step ahead. This can be very frustrating and unless you can totally dominate your market, you will spend your time looking backwards as much as you do looking forward.

Give this a shot if you think you can handle it. You may end up at the top of the pile if you have the dedication and more importantly, the passion if you are finding a niche that is ultra-competitive. However, through the use of specialized and ultra-specific niches, you have an avenue to online success that can yield massive rewards, especially those who do extensive research before entering the niche. Unlike their ultra-competitive counterparts, the audience for these niches are not as wide. However, massive payouts can be found for those who are dedicated and smart enough to understand their market possibilities and dynamics.

So which do you prefer, finding a niche that is more refined ultra-niche idea or the very time consuming passion project which is very profitable. Most online empires are built with a combination of the two. Years of research and hard work in the field that the internet marketer is passionate about, along with the hard data and calculations that are validated with a large amount of research into markets along with commercial viability. This is where you want to be in the end.

Being involved in a project without knowing where you are moving and how you are getting there is a bad deal, and you won't be able to ride the market forever. The big payoff in the long run will come from the time you spend finding a niche that your project will excel in.
